  • here here!

  • Ah. Thanks for the reminder..

veevee on complete song on this topic - http://www.lfgss.com/thread7452.html

This ASL thread is also good. http://www.lfgss.com/thread15529.html

  • aaaand this gem from Herr Schick

    http://www.lfgss.com/post412867-131.html

  • aha, I guess my calling them Advance Stopping Zones and everyone else calling them Advance Stopping Line is the reason I couldn't find it on the search.

Ah well, they still right fuck me off they do

  • i made a complaint to the police about hammersmith junction when they were stopping RLJ cyclists but not policing the ASL's

fuck all came of it, they did call me and some poor muppet who had clearly just been on a difficult customer course had me run circles around everything he said.

  • No chance, too many grey areas unfortunately. Would be nice if they were policed though.

  • usually on my commute the cars don't fit in it because its full of scooters and motorbikes

  • It would be nice (but far to complex I am sure) if motorised bikes had the right and human powered bikes the left.

  • Recently while cycling with Prancer, we came to a red light. A car passed us just before the light and pulled up to a halt completely within the ASL box.

I rode past her and stopped in front of her. James followed.

I looked down under her car and pointed. James looked as well. I shook my head still pointing. She looked worried. She asked through an open window what was wrong.

I said "Have a look at this".

She got out of her car and looked down.

"You're in an ASL" I said while pointing to the fact.

The lights changed. We rode off and she was left standing beside her car with her engine off and with cars behind her using their horns impatiently.

Either she has learnt her lesson or she will hate cyclists forever and do serious injury to one in the near future. Still, it made us chuckle.

  • As I just posted in another ASL thread they're a waste of time in many cases and have an inherent irritation factor to other road users. I'm sure Surly if everyone joined queues at traffic lights and junctions -assuming it's not gridlock- in the middle and staying there until you've exited they'd be much safer and predictable for all to negoitiate. Thanks to cyclists/motorcylists impatience* you can easily get confused when folk are cutting in front of you from all angles at particular junctions.

  • And as I said in the other topic, completely agree with this, work with the traffic FTW.

I read this twice and have no idea what you're trying to say.

  • Agree with Grooves. Tried adding my voice to one of the threads yesterday but it got lost somewhere in the merge / my confused mind / iphone user slippery (RIP Steve). Get rid altogether.

  • I read this twice and have no idea what you're trying to say.

Now you know how the rest of us feel when you start talking about the forum redesign.

  • I hope my sentences are at parsable even if the words are sometimes technical.

  • I think you lost Will on "parseable". He is an English graduate, after all.

  • Bloody pedants.

I'm sure if everyone joined queues at traffic lights and junctions - assuming it's not gridlock - in the middle of the lane, behind/in front of cars and stayed there until the traffic moved off junctions would be much safer and predictable for all to negotiate. Clearer?

  • I hope my sentences are at parsable even if the words are sometimes technical.

Not if you keep missing words out.

  • Whilst I broadly agree with the anti-ASL sentiment as expressed by MG, I have to admit that my pet hate du jour is the motorist who pulls into the left-most of two lanes, passes all the traffic queued in the "main" lane, then boots it off the lights, pulling sharply right across the traffic in the other lane to avoid the inevitable buss lane that he is heading into.

I think the first warning, with no ability to reduce this or appeal it, should be the car to be crushed and a £10,000 fine levied for this behavior.

So, in light of that, I don't mind the ASL turning into a log-jam if it holds up someone who has decided that they are more important than everyone else, and will put others at risk to get to the next traffic light ahead of everyone else.

    Sorry, I'll start again:

Green Boxes potentially irritate other road users. If I get to the front of a queue in a motorised vehicle then all of a sudden this green box in front of me is filled with all ability riders that DO make my exit from said junction much slower, it's undeniable there will vexation and aggressive risky overtake manouvers from drivers. If cyclists were a little more patient and joined these queues like all the other vehicles; in the middle of the lane and set off in the order that they got there with motorised vehicles, psychologically there'd be less agitation.
Once you've passed the junction (i.e. it's exits and any left or right turning vehicles) then and only then should you be looking at moving back to the left as a slower moving vehicle. Afterall it's not F1, cars rarely get to pull off that quickly anyway. Once they get to speed the road in front will have cleared somewhat.

  • My root's are in Africa ya daft racist.

Don't know if you drive as well as cycle but as one who does I find the habit of drivers to queue up in the right hand lane instead of queueing in both lanes and zip-merging when the bus lane starts moronic and irritating. Same thing when there's roadworks on a dual carriageway, at the first sign saying there's a lane closed 5 miles down the road everyone piles into the open lane and looks at you like you just killed their firstborn if you stay in the lane which is closing.
