you don't want a trials bike, that's for hopping about on. Recent PORC races have been won by a dude on a hardtail (much to my mate's disappointment as his expensive Nukeproof got thrashed). Search 'Mr Bling' (the site's messing up my computer - v.slow so not gonna link it) as he's the dude who organises PORC racing.
If you're in B'Hill then there is supposed to be a new jump / ride spot opening nearish to you sometime soon, but they've been very quiet recently so unsure if it's still going ahead.
For southern downhill on a budget a slack hardtail would be ideal, a full on downhill bike would be wasted locally and a budget full sus is generally compromised.
