i do think it's horrendously patronising and sexist that pretty much all womens "cycle specific" gear (and bikes!) are so hideous/covered in flowers or swirly bollocks. I went through all of this with my girlfriend recently and have to agree re:the crap selection spoken about above. I should also add that she has a couple of jerseys now and the cut of the one Rapha jersey is x10,000 better than anything else - she is so much happier in it as a result. Sample sale ftw.
HOWEVER I totally agree with Jersey re: not really needing anything specific for cycling in town as really, it doesn't place huge strains on your body or bike. As long as you have a comfortable pair of shorts/trousers and a waterproof you're good.
Would also add that we managed to get my lady a northface jacket that does the job nicely for about £70, which in the grand scheme of things is pretty reasonable..Especially when you consider that you could buy 4 for the same price as a Rapha softshell
