  • Always the same type of vehicles and always know accident spots. This stretch of road is very very dangerous :(

It's a really bad stretch - even if you're in the middle lane to go onto Pentonville Road, you still get bell-ends cutting you up to turn left into York Way.
    RIP...

  • Thoughts & prayers for the lady, her friends & family

  • This is indeed tragic. It’s also yet another example of a female cyclist being killed at a junction by an HGV. I personally don’t think that the TFL campaigns regarding this have been strong or direct enough, especially towards the most vulnerable group of London cyclists, inexperienced women.

The statistics corroborate these hard truths. The official 2009 report into London cyclist deaths showed how 3/4 of London cyclists are men, but 3/4 of deaths are of women.

I took part in the most recent TFL HGV campaign. The photo shoot subjects were composed of a gender and ethnic mix to represent London, fair enough you might say, but what’s the use in photographing me, a fit, 32 year old, male, experienced cyclist to articulate a risk that applies most to an entirely different demographic?

I accept that there are many contributing factors, that road layout and HGV behaviour are serious factors in this, but changing cyclist behaviour must surely be of importance, since behaviour seems to have such an impact on the statistics.

There are messages on Twitter reminding riders to wear bright colours. That’s not the issue here. My thoughts are with the family of this rider. It’s a sad day, but I think these points are very valid. I despair every time I see a female rider heeling it along the curb next to a bus or HGV at a junction. Serious action is needed, and it doesn’t come in the form of politically correct advertising or polite messages about “visibility.”

  • This is such awful news. I had such a great morning out riding in the sun but this just reminds you what we're facing. TFL are not doing nearly enough. All Lorry driver training is still voluntary. There's been no talk of over turning the night time noise restriction shite rules. 13 so far? This is awful.

I really do feel for all involved. I hope one day we can collectively make London a great cycling city. I believe that will mean no lorries in peak hours.

    R.I.P rider.

  • Also can I ask that we not call these incidents 'accidents'. They are avoidable, not accidents. Lorries can't see us by design. That is no accident. Sorry if I sound pedantic but I think we need to change the way we understand and communicate these events.

all good points but not the right thread. Let's discuss this elsewhere and keep this thread free from argument and make it a place to pay respect?

  • Terrible news
    Condolences to the family.
I feel sick each time these threads come up.

  • Rip.

  • Awful news, RIP

  • Thinking of the family and friends.

  • Horrible, horrible, sad news.
Always shocking, and especially so as just round the corner.
Condolences to the family, and those for whom this brings back similar memories.

  • Horrible news. Rode through there for the first time in ages recently and was struck by what a miserable, dangerous layout it still is. Something has to be done about the site truck problem.

  • This is awful news.
The new St.Martins college opened today behind St.Pancras and a lot of student came by bike.

    So sad.

  • A hit and run involving a car and cyclist on Waterloo Bridge. Cyclist receiving CPR. Anyone able to confirm?

  • Awful. Thoughts go out to this lady's family and loved ones during what can only be a terrible time.

    Safe riding everyone!

  • So sad to read of yet another tragic fatality with a lorry. My thoughts are with the family.

  • RIP lady cyclist. Found out about this on twitter earlier today, and couldn't believe the number of braindead comments about hi vis and helmets :-(

  • A hit and run involving a car and cyclist on Waterloo Bridge. Cyclist receiving CPR. Anyone able to confirm?

Police say pedestrian involved in Waterloo incident not a cyclist.

  • I found out today that the girl killed was the girlfriend of someone I know.

I've set up a thread regarding cycle safety for students here, if anyone is involved with CTC, LCC, TfL etc then please get in touch. Thanks.

  • RIP, cyclist.

This makes me sad and scared; I ride that junction twice a day.

Out of interest, would you approach on the left-hand (turning left) lane, or would you use the middle lane like most cars?

  • awful news, RIP
