I thought I gave some pretty solid reasoning, but my advice has been overlooked.
Next you will tell me you work for DV

So, all in all, you're happy with your 3 year old macbook that has FW. But it would be nice if you could buy a new one for roughly £750. Correct?
Not correct. Seriously if you wish to advice me on the subject than maybe ask some probing questions so you actually know what I require.

I'm not really up for stipulating where I work, but I can assure you it isn't DV. I used to though.

You must in some way be affiliated with someone at DV in some way shape or form. Or perhaps you work at DV.
Feel free to PM me what your connection is, but not a conversation for the public forum.

Has this been turned off and on yet?

Nope, no affiliation what so ever. Just made the mistake of purchasing an item from them.
But for a moment I would like you to think about this..... an Apple household. Lets just say mummy or daddy work with power macs at work (media job of some sort no doubt). Have a powerbook for own use and taking work home etc. Kids have ipods. Daddy or mummy or both have invested in many external HDD over the years, lets say Lacie( though these are crap). They chose FW as well they are loyal to "mac". Seems to be a logical choice. They want to get their kids a laptop each, they are at uni or college or school..blah..blah. Powerbooks? They are out of budget. Mac book? well would be nice to use those external HDDs with them, just for the dam convenience of it all.
No Apples arrogance thought better. It was a bad and inconsiderate decision as far as I am concerned.
The arguments I have heard so far are just utter tripe. Yes Apple can do what the fuck they want. Apple customer from 1993 to 2009. No Loyalty here any more. RIP

If that was my family, I'd have got the house up on NAS storage by now, and my kids can fuck off, get a summer job and buy their own MAC and get an external HDD with the money saved from their student discount.
My parents certainly didn't buy me a computer when I went to university, in fact I built my own computer as that was cheaper than buying a Mac, and I was more than able to get by on that.

Dude, it is not an unreasonable expectation of mine to expect apple to stick their own FW technology on their range of laptops. OSX was for what? What was the main driving force behind that? Network integration with Windows. Apple want an all apple household. I don't think anyone would dispute this but AGAIN dropping FW on mac books for the sake of a dollor is cuntish.
Why the fuck would you defend that?

If you can buy all that, ipods for the kids and all, i doubt you'd struggle to come up with £150 more for a macbook pro

Nailbrush, having read this long and convoluted back and forth go on over the last couple of pages.
I can only think who gives a flying fuck, apart from your good self. If you'd taken the time to read back through some of the 40 odd pages that this thread has existed for before you decided to deign us with your personal reasons for deciding mac wasn't for you anymore, you'd see it's mostly a resource for those who own and use mac's to share information. Not a soapbox to give Apple a good kicking, or a platform to tell us it's all emperor's new clothes..Really who cares, either you buy and use Mac's and get around their way of doing stuff, product launches, changing specs, etc. Or you don't.
No need to witness like some streetcorner preacher to convert those who are blind to the lies being perpetrated upon them. So you no longer like Apple or will give them any more of your money. Okay. And....
Nobody needs to know the rest. Nobody wants to know the rest.
So maybe you should just give it a rest.
That is all...

Yo!
Trying to connect to my work server from home. Using VPN... used to work at my old place and with a different router but for some reason its displaying a error message saying its located on my local server when i try and connect. Im guessing its to do with an IP address clash.
Anyone know how to fix?

but most external FW drives also have usb. i can't think of any external drive that doesn't have the former without the latter.
have you thought about emailing Steve Jobs? he might give a fuck about about your spurious argument.

There's a Mac under my desk, it's currently got CentOS on it and it's a file server. Best thing I did to it.
Using a Lenovo workstation as the primary computer at the moment with Xubuntu. It's a delight.
