apple removed FW on the unibody macbook. the unibody macbook was a bit of an anomaly in that it was a macbook in a macbookpro body and wasn't around for very long and was replaced with the white macbook. FW was always available on the macbookpro.
i still don't see how they are 'shafting' you. yes it was more expensive to get FW but that's a business decision by apple, they sell premium products they can spec them how they like and that along with faster processors, backlit keyboard, better graphics etc is how they differentiate between pro and amateur.
sometimes this can go in your favor, sometimes not.
