  • and how are you shafted if you own a fw400 device and buy a fw800 mac?

  • Quit trolling old man...

  • qwe

  • how exactly are apple shafting you?

intel own the IP the trademark is just that, a trademark. sony used firewire for their camcorders but called it something else, intel call thunderbolt 'lightpeak'

  • qwe

  • Not all macs have FW800.

but if they have any kind of firewire port you can use any kind of firewire device 400/800. no firewire port? use usb then.
fail to see how that is being shafted by apple.

  • Not all macs have FW800.

all but macbook air has it(?)

you'd have to go quite a way back to find a mac without fw800, unless you talk about macbook (not pro) which is a consumer laptop anyway

  • Apple used to make quality products, but that was way before OSX and way before Hipsters would sit in coffee shops with them.

"apple used to be better" whiners can >>>>>>

  • No firewire port. no use for some. Apple dropped FW all together on their mac books. They start from over £800 and don't have any FW option. That is a fucking disgrace, why would anyone try and justify that?

buy one that does have firewire. can't afford it? tough shit buy a P.C.
Apple don't have to justify anything.

  • Argh.
You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to MrSmyth again.

  • buy one that does have firewire. can't afford it? tough shit buy a P.C.
Apple don't have to justify anything.

They used to have them on their mac books. Apple offer a range of products, ultimately for different pockets. You have a consumer who has bought into that particular range and wishes to upgrade for a new computer after a couple of years and discovers Apple well that option isn't really open to them now, unless of course they spend twice as much!!

You must be on a wind up. I have read many a sensible post from you on this forum, but this I just don't get.

  • twice as much? Coupla hundred rather.

sounds like you're a bit grumpy cause you can't afford a mac? £999 for a macbook pro isn't expensive for what you get. After hearing all the moaning in the office from people with random pc laptops they spent say 200-300 less on, adding a bit more money and enjoy something that actually does what it's supposed to do is nothing but a good investment

  • apple removed FW on the unibody macbook. the unibody macbook was a bit of an anomaly in that it was a macbook in a macbookpro body and wasn't around for very long and was replaced with the white macbook. FW was always available on the macbookpro.
i still don't see how they are 'shafting' you. yes it was more expensive to get FW but that's a business decision by apple, they sell premium products they can spec them how they like and that along with faster processors, backlit keyboard, better graphics etc is how they differentiate between pro and amateur.

sometimes this can go in your favor, sometimes not.

  • Some can't afford. That's how it is.

If you can't afford it, buy a cheap PC with FW. Simple.

Apple, like any other company, are in business to make money. If they can charge what they charge for their products; fair play to them. They aren't a charity to deliver cheap FW to the masses.

  • I think that consumer interests are important. I think we have a poor balance in society in this area. Also it would appear that those who are fortunate enough not to worry about these issues have no empathy or consideration for those on lower incomes and have a "doesn't effect me, I don't give shit attitude."

You have taught me nothing about computers or business mrsmyth, but you have confirmed my views on some of the problematic attitudes of this dam country.

you make it sound like i was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, FWIW i grew up with free school meals on a council estate and have been poor without any bank of mum and dad to fall back on, only i didn't become unpoor by grizzling about a manufacturer not putting firewire on a computer.

you think apple shafted you? just MTFU and deal with it.

  • Low income? Really? I doubt that...

  • Is this someone moaning about FW ports???

If this is only to connect a harddrive, then wow! Yep, I had an old Mac Book with firewire, and that had all my drives and my soundcard connected up to it. By the time that Mac Book died, the whole body was smashed to shit. I replaced it with a Mac Book Pro because I didn't want to have to replace a rather expensive sound card. It was actually cheaper to buy the mac than replace all my drive caddies and interface. The mac book, was already starting to be overpriced for what was a consumer product, and certainly wouldn't be up to the rigours of music or video production, or anything much beyond facebook and updating your ipod.

Are you going to freakout when USB 2 gets replaced with USB 3 ports? FW is old, and the way it works is being superseeded by USB and "thunderbolt" devices.

Compare this to the the minefield that is selecting a PC with a reliable FW port, let alone a laptop, then I don't think Apple are shafting people too much. No PC laptop even offers you buss power from FW which is pretty stupid of you want to be mobile whilst working.
