ed, you may find it better to hire a bike out there, just take saddle and shoes with you
-
• #3
do you have to clean your bike to take it into the states or is that just Australia and NZ?
-
• #4
I know, but I know you know that taking your own bike (especially your Mather) to a different kind of road is an awesome feeling.
that why I wanted to take the rusty fixie skidder and try and beat my friend's fiance on his Independent Fabrication XS bicycle.
I want to take it as a suitcase with some of my clothes in it too.

Just get a box from a bike shop and a shit-load of pipe lagging. Get your arse up to Morplan and buy some of that cling film stuff that you can cover suitcases in and make sure you're insured. You can even stick your schmutter in.
Job's a good'un.

should that be rusty or trusty fixie skidder
hiring bikes seems like it could make sense if there is a decent shop that can hire and dial a road bike to fit you

rusty and trusty I suppose, it been with me to a lots of centuries ride, and soon Scherrit will tweak it to comfort.
Going to the airport soon to talk to the airliner about bicycle boxes, need to know if there's anything I need to do.

i thought you said it was too long in the top tube for the j-rex physique?
-

it is - will tell you more soon.
and it's not the short arm, it's the short chest, which mean I still can give you a good contemporary punch up the bracket.

I took a regular cardboard bike box to Japan and my friend took a traditional hard bike box.
I stuffed mine with bubble wrap and everything was ok. Plus I came in a few kilos under my weight limit, whereas my friend was significantly over (bike boxes are heavy), and had to throw away a few heavy items. Something to bear in mind.

point taken.
I just like the security of the hard case.
will pack it the normal way (and the fiance will have a good bike shop nearby).

I think Dulwich Paragon have some to rent......i have a thick padded bag, has done a few trips to S.America....if you want it let me know as it is not in London...

Have you got one yet, Ed?

• #14
thinking of a cardboard box from work that'll be packed tightly and as small as possible to be taken in as hand luggage instead.
-
• #15
Ok (although they won't let you take it as hand luggage). If you want to borrow a hardshell box then let me know.

You won't be able to squeeze a box that size into the cage thingy that's next to every check-in desk!
Just pack it as normal with bubble wrap with your clothes in bags, cover it in that cling film stuff and you'll be fine.
My brother brought a tv home using the same method and it's still going fine.

sorry, not hand luggage, HOLD luggage.
thank Andy, will let you know if I do need to.

Where in Cali are you going Ed? There's some great cycling to be had out there, although I'd enjoy my gears on the hills!
-
• #19
I actually enjoyed my fixed ascending more than geared, it's only the descending I'm not keen on.

Luciano on Battersea Rise rent out a fitted hard shell box for £30/week iirc. Doesn't look like much room for more luggage than the bike + wheels but can't beat the protection.

Even my tiny independent (literally one man owns, runs, cleans, does everything, but he = legend) now rent bike boxes (loads from round here go to play in the alps). Cant remember the brand, but you can fit a decent sized MTB with wheels & stem/bars off, hard case with a soft neoprene wheel bags inside and about the £25 a week sort of cost (guess the boxes cost a couple of hundred to buy new?).

last minute call. does anyone out there have a cardboard bike box to spare? or maybe a soft bag to borrow?
-
• #23

I have a bike box which may be okay (just need to give it a quick check). Was going to free cycle it if it was.
I can take it East Beers this Wednesday. PM me if you're interested.
Do anyone have a bike box I can borrow? the price are pretty insane (but understandable), and I'm flying to California soon to visit a friend whose fiance will take me out on the beautiful californian road to ride with.
