I dont think the grade is that important. The poles bend when they are dented. The same thing would happen with a high quality steel frame tube that would normally be extremely strong in its un-dented condition. Because the walls are thin.

well i dont know about that dfp. everybody using ski poles seems to maintaining straight poles. whilst all the guys using straight aluminium poles seem to be at a curve of 10 degrees. Also on the london part of the forum as well as the lhbpa shop the tried and tested grade of aluminium seems to be 7075 t6 aluminium. the mechanical properties of all the grades also seem to bear this out. 7075 t6 has twice the tensile strength of 6083 t6 with about half the elongation (stretch) ie stronger and stiffer.
Obviously all this academic until it is proven on the courts, which is really what I am tring to assess,

7075 poles from Rik/Perros are where it is at. They're only £8 or so, and if you bear in mind you have to invest 30-60 minutes making a mallet, they pay for themselves when they don't bend/snap too soon.
My 'everyday' mallet is a bit kinked now, but I've probably been using it for 6 months, twice a week, and I'll carry on until it's really bad.
I have two or three spares in my shed, which is what everyone else should do.
Sick of lending mallets to regulars...

Yeah, but dont you see it doesnt matter how good the tensile strength is if the tube manufacturer has made the walls thinner because of this increased strength. If it gets dented then it is compromised.

yeah, but don't you see that 7075 is stronger for any given weight/design, so if you buy another grade it will either be weaker or heavier. also, not for the first time, your applying bullshit theory to something you have pretty low experience of. why not just accept you know less than the other people involved for once? it's not something to be ashamed of. I probably know less than you about shitheap 70s road bikes for example...

Re: pole material. That 7075 stuff snaps. My stuff bends (hence you can bend it back) lasts for ever. People at the London open were using those Rik things and they were snapping all over the shop
