7075 poles from Rik/Perros are where it is at. They're only £8 or so, and if you bear in mind you have to invest 30-60 minutes making a mallet, they pay for themselves when they don't bend/snap too soon.
My 'everyday' mallet is a bit kinked now, but I've probably been using it for 6 months, twice a week, and I'll carry on until it's really bad.
I have two or three spares in my shed, which is what everyone else should do.
