Milk Bikes: Belt Drives and Disc Brakes

  • Sat in my usual window seat in LookMum.

    And rather than looking past the bikes, static in the window, to the ones that rush past constantly outside the window. I look at the ones directly in front of me, on the horrendously expensive stands, and hooks by Quaterre, http://www.quarterre.com/products-page/

    The bikes, form a company called Milk are their blurb says a brand new bike company based out of Clemsford, and all of their bikes are designed around belt drives, and disc brakes.

    Took a quick look at the website and they seem decent enough. One model currently in production the Commuter which comes with either an 8spd or 11Spd Alfine hub. And with a fixed/singlespeed frame and a hardtail mountain bike frame, to be produced in the future.

    Not so sure about the pricetag though 1450GBP all in for the 8spd, 1650GBP for the 11spd.

    website is below,

    For some reason I've gotten interested in belt drives, ease of use, no grease, longevity, etc, and I know manufacturers have started building bikes with belt drives, but it's piqued my interest that a company has eschewed the normal drive train for this modern take on it..

  • Although. This, written in English, is, completely incomprehensible to, me.

  • AndyW posted these in the beltdrive thread. The ADL looks nice. Considering what the RRP of a belt compatible SpotBrand 29er is. The pricing seems to follow the market.

  • Smallfurry, didn't know there was a belt drive thread, didn't pop up when I was creating this one.
    I was hoping some eagle eyes forumite had already spied them.
    Though speaking to jimbilly out at south's he's of the opinion that belt drives are going to go the way of the dodo what with trek discontinuing their belt drive bikes..

    pricing seemed normal, Alfine 11 cost about as much as the excellent Genesis (although better value with Reynold 853 despite the lack of belt drive);

    I have a belt drive 29er.

    My opinion of belt drive commuters, is pretty much the same as that of hub geared commuters. Yes they require less maintainance, and yes they are a little more idiot proof. But at the end of the day, when things feck up (and they always will on a daily hack). The cost and availability of parts is horrendous compared to a basic Deore mech, and chain. It comes down to the KISS principle. C+ seem to love these things, but I'm not convinced its what your average joe needs.

    I love my 29er though, (I'm going to pick up a alfine sprocket to future proof it somewhat). Would'nt change for the world.
