Hi everyone,
A year ago I had an accident cycling and I've not cycled since as I get anxious. I was thinking about taking up riding round london again as it will save money and is a good way to exercise.
I was wondering if anyone could advise me on how to get over the anxiety?
Many thanks,
JHi
I was advised to take it slowly, practice riding around the park first. But I bet some cycle training will make all the difference. -

If I were you I'd get trains with my bike into the countryside or a park and get into it again slowly and sensibly. Think of it as your one accident, the one you always worried about having, and now it's over. I had an accident 6 months ago and got major shoulder surgery, it does make you more careful. If it's bad anxiety you could see about conselling through your doctor. Ask him to refer you to a specialist. Talk about it with other cyclists and go out in a group, this might help. I'm sure the anxiety will subside over time.

My best advice is to contact one of the local resident cycle trainer, they're great in helping you getting over your anxiety, and being able to feel more confident after your accident.
Don't know why the other were unhelpful (especially you kiwi boy).

I had an accident in 1996 and it took me till last year to get back on a bike. It was cycling on holiday in France that made me start again. When I got back to London I was sh*t scared of cylcing near traffic so I stayed on the back-street blue-sign-posted cycle routes (free maps from the TFL website), all hi-vis and lights. That helped me get comfortable with cycling again.

I was off the road for about four years back in the early noughties after some knee problems and I was shit scared when I got back amongst London traffic... I was absolutely fine after a coupla weeks tho', back to my old wreckless self... ;]
Get out there, be careful, you'll be fine...
