Go on BMXTALK and see what comes up second hand. OTP bikes are a bit wank, find something that somebody has put some love into already.
For a basic bike, you cant go wrong with a Dialled MX20.

Is there some advantage to be had with 24" wheels? They're just plain wrong on a BMX

OTP bikes are fine, depends what it is and what you pay for it. Just don't buy those in the LBS aimed at 13 year-olds for doing their paper round on. Go for something around £500 by a rider-owned company like FBM or S&M if you can find it.

You mean fucked about with?

Somebody I spoke to who races BMX suggested for me a se floval flyer I thought riding track league may hone my track skills.

I thought you might be using it for the rest of what BMX has to offer, street, park and trails (you don't have to do tricks in any of those if you don't want to). I have no idea about track BMX, so please ignore my comments above.

I'd say there is nothing wrong with a decent OTP, its worth looking for deals on previous years models, you can pick up a decent spec bike for about half price, now is probably the perfect time for that to be honest.

More stable. A lot of older riders returning to racing find em easier than a 20", Cruiser classes are as fast as 20" and very competitive.
You can hire bikes at the new centre, I'd do that before shelling out. As far as OTP bikes go Redline is king, most others you'll be changing components quite quickly. New bikes are coming in now but there aren't a huge amount of race bikes imported so you might need to be quick.
All well and good looking at custom built bikes and you might get a bargain as they do depreciate massively but the rider will have built it up for them and it won't necessarily be right for you.
if you have a small head I've got a nice Troy Lee I could sell you cheap ;)
Absolute bargain cruiser here...

and a cheap 20"

Kingcutter, buy that cruiser ^ before I convince myself I have room for it. If it's your first venture into BMX you'll appreciate the forgiveness of the bigger wheels, and will probably find the bike alot more confortable.

That Standard is a bargain and well worth it. Unless you really want a Floval Flyer in which case i have one its an 09 model pretty much as standard but homegrown grey paintjob and an FSA bmx race crank - £200. If your interested i will get some pics posted.

Kingcutter - didn't realise you'd bought one already, have see your tweets about track. Bargain you got there.
I'm doing my L2 BMX so I can take schools groups along, it's this weekend coming and I've had a willpower fail and bought a Haro Pro XL 20" wheeled jobby for £275. I think this is the same as what they'll be using at the track for hire (bike biz reported today they're using Haro).
Got Matt Black rather than the blue pictured.. Had to build it in the office as it was too wet to get a boxed bike home, so then got soaked riding back home from central Manc. Feels pretty solid, would've liked a racier one with narrow tyres but at my level I think this will be more than enough to pootle around on.
Hoping to get to some Friday evening induction sessions, track closed for repairs at moment I'm told though.

Might be worth checking. If 1st and 2nd straights are finished they might be running gates.
