Quite often, engineers don't have the money for schemes to redesign the entire footway area, e.g. resloping the footway to get the drainage right across it, which is why you see a lot of schemes with these detached footway build-outs. Both the build-out and the main footway will drain into that channel.

We tend to recommend central cycle gaps and obviously no car parking right across off-centre gaps. Is this a one-way street and the cycle track a contraflow track? This is genuinely an example of bad practice.
