Guy has (or had) a track version of these:
What's the general opinion on them?
Disclaimer- I'm not getting the SRM unit, just interested.

srms are awesome, but unaffordable, powertaps are verging on the affordable, but you are stuck with the wheel that they are built into (obviously).
my 2p.

A pair of those SRM cranks went for ~£400 on eBay a couple of days ago.
How much do powertap hubs go for these days?

Those Garmin pedals are still gonna be north of £500 + head unit
It's half the cost of an SRM but not what you'd call cheap

That is much higher than the initial suggested prices a couple of years ago - guessing early adopters will be swallowing a lot of the R&D costs.
But as you should get left and right power out put its still better than a hub for data capture.
And so many ANT devices will be able to pick it up even previous iterations of the garmin (eg 705) can receive power information.

Te real interesting bit will come, not from the ability to measure power but to measure power over particular terrain.

i really want to measure my power, but why?
i don't race and have no particular goals
but just want more information
its not like i take the current data from my garmin and then train to improve it (actually i do try to maintain a steady ish cadence)
and then as I ride with a club it's not as if I could do the iso-power thing as the power output is harder to maintain at a constant level when ascending in a bunch etc
though perhaps this could inspire me to start doing tt's

I find info like this really interesting- I record my heart rate for every "proper" run and ride that I do, not that I do anything with it afterward, just compare to other runs or rides.
So, I like the idea of power being recorded, and if it displayed in Garmin Connect then that would be great- my 705 can connect via ANT+ to either an SRM crank or a Powertap I think?
I'm getting the Hollowgram cranks next month, so could go the SRM route, but they are extremely expensive- I'd be able to justify to myself maybe a couple of hundred quid, but well over a grand? Forget it.

If you want to measure your power output and not too bothered about accuracy try http://www.strava.com/
It's free for a limited account. -

UK RRP is £1100 plus a head unit. US is $1500.
They could have properly changed the market but that pricing is stupid.

1500usd without head unit, available Mar 2012, Garmin (look) pedals only for now.
Who says I don't look after you lost souls...
Alien showed me that blog link earlier this year
pedal power measurement does look like the easily affordable solution, just hoping they do it for speedplays
