On the cheaper end, LG seem to be fine. I have one, and so do the parents. Generally, stick with known good names and you should be ok. People might bore you with technical details; I wouldn't worry too much about that, just try and look at the telly you're going to buy in real-life and decide if you're happy with it.
Just avoid never-heard-of brand names from places like supermarkets. They'll often be re-housed computer screens and look and sound hideous.
