Gokarna in Karnataka is much nicer than Goa if you are after a chilled backpacker holiday rather than the package experience. In November you will be able to rent a hut on Om beach for around 50 rupees a night and there will probably be parties going on if you want that sort of thing. It's about 2 hrs by train from south Goa. The food can be a bit hit and miss on the beaches but there is a kickass dosa place in Gokarna town. The beaches will be full of didgeridoo and bong(o) toting trustafarians but it's also incredibly beautiful and if you swim at night there will definitely be phosphorescence.
