  • just josh's i think. Emmets had a dent from either dave or my handle bars hitting top tube.

  • josh's has a couple of small dings and he has recently got a huge dent filled out. no one knows how the big dent got there, most likely he dropped his frame onto another bikes pedal.

  • Yeah had a massive dent on the down tube-got it filled out. the frames are pretty solid-any frame would have been dented with an impact like the one I had.

I do also have small dents on the seat stays of my frame. I guessing from little knocks here and there and falling off a bit.

    but thats polo

  • or poor metal/tube thickness choice. dt got a dent on his top tube too...from his own brake hitting it when the bars twisted round hard - was gutted for him. do you know what grade the tubes are?

  • Did I hear that all the 14 frames are already dented?

I heard it from you at the London Open.

  • I need a new BB. Is this a good time to get some cranks that are shorter than 175s?

  • I heard it from you at the London Open.

    Ha! Really?

  • I got the same dent as Dave on the top tube of my RC because of the brake during the game against synthese in Barcelona, I'm pretty sure it would happen with any frame, not matter what the tubes are.

  • Just got a reply from the Dodici guys, retail for the frame will be around £375, is that F&F or just frame? apparently available from 14 and tfg...

14 are going to sell a polo frame from a different manufacturer that is cheaper then theirs?

£375 is pretty good for frame and forks.

£375 for just the frame apparently. The 135mm spaced fork is £100.
The alu is 6061 and 1,8 thickness overall.

  • I've dented every polo frame I've ever owned, sucks.

That makes sense Joni as the F&F was listed as £475 for a while, thanks for the info.

  • Sloping top tube = no stupid lever into top tube issues.

  • 4130 = no stupid lever into top tube issues

  • Gabes' troll sklz > Bill's troll sklz

  • Err, I didn't dent the top tube (BB is dented on the forks, stays and seat tube) and 4130 is still easily dented (when reckless perhaps).

Dents are cool, on trend, etc.

  • My Foff never dented, just scraped on the tt.
    Ahem, anyways...

is 6061 alu strong enough for polo?

  • Potentially.

  • Anything will break under enough force (big enough crash), if you ride your polo bike nicely then it shouldn't fail on you (normal usage), but you can never avoid someone barreling into you at 90 degrees full tilt.

6061 alu is strong enough for DH so could be fine. It's not just about material type though, it's about thickness, build style, frame design, quality control, etc.

The only way of future proofing your purchase is to get a good warranty, or insure the bike, or buy a Russian TiBike (apparently).

  • We'll see with the Russian Ti. In theory it's stronger (or gives more and returns better) so shouldn't dent anywhere as easily as steel. I'll leave this theory to father time (not Bill) to decide.

  • Anyone spending close to £500 on a polo bike would be insane not to go with Triton for some russian Ti. It is obviously the best option out there. You do have to design your own bike, but if you know what you want then you should wait another month and get that extra 75 quid to buy some custom titanium!

The other options are not titanium and not custom, so you are compromising everywhere, for a very similar price.

  • i have to say i would love a Ti bike. The 14 is being made in different sizes and as todd can confirm it is custom.

  • It's all about metal elasticity, if I remember correctly from Material's Science which I did at college, Young's Modulus and some other testing, shows the point at which a metal yeilds it's elasticity and becomes plastic (meaning it will bend and not return to it's original form).

Yield strength (the point of no return) gives a good idea of how different metals compare.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_tensile_strength

    Material - Yield Strength (MPa = N/mm2)
    Steel (high strength) 690
    Aluminium (2014) 414
    Titanium 940
    Aramid (Kevlar) 3620

  • It would be great to have some clarity on the 14 thing, B. The polo community need to know what the geometry is (bb height/chainstays/STA/HTA), what the deal on sizes/custom is and what the price is. There are lots of options out there now, I still think going for the local UK made is the right decision, but at the moment people are confused about what a 14 polo bike is.

Todd and Josh Cambridge's are badged Kajak, as Kamal made them as a custom bike through 14. Yours, Emmet's and Dave's are badged 14 as they are a stock size/geo, right? Wrong?

I'm not trying to start any arguments, just it would be great to have everything set in stone for people to weigh up their options. As more and more options are presenting themselves.

  • lets not forget the de rosa bike

  • The bike that shall not be mentioned.

  • Anyone spending close to £500 on a polo bike would be insane not to go with Triton for some russian Ti. It is obviously the best option out there. You do have to design your own bike, but if you know what you want then you should wait another month and get that extra 75 quid to buy some custom titanium!

That's a fair point, but on the other hand I don't know exactly what I want, so I'll probably spend £375 on a dodici instead.
