I have a dilema...

With this, I like the paint, but it's reallllllllly tatty, loads of scratches bits of rust etc.
Would cleaning up and masking the chrome, then matte blacking the rest of it be completely unforgiveable? It's meant to be a bit of a sleeper/beater anyway... just can't decide whether to leave it.
I love the matte black & chrome thang.
