Stolen bikes

  • My mate got there but it was no longer around. Now there's some hipster with no ethics riding around on it. Why don't the police crack down on the people blatantly selling stolen bikes on Brick Lane?

london being set on fire > bike theft

  • ^ i had my bike nicked a few months back, so I'm not unsympathetic at all. the rozzers have other things to do than hang round broadway market questioning street stall attendants though

  • Hey all. My friend just had his 2009 Trek 1.2 stolen outside the Pembury Tavern in Hackney. The frame is black with red and white details, white bar tape and saddle, plus black pannier rack and kick stand. Looks like this one: http://www.theantidj.net/archives/91 (but with the additional stuff.) Thanks for keeping an eye out - he's gutted.

There are usually quite a few people outside the pub smoking cigarettes. Do you know what lock he used, how it was broken?

Agreed, but I still see a lot of coppers doing fuck all. They could have one or two less trying to screw us for jumping the odd red light and try to nail some bike thieves instead. Why should we all be so complacent over something so obviously illegal? Clearly this is the tip of an iceberg, as there are many criminal activities that go on that the same could be said.

  • I live really close to Sclater st, they did have coppers sniffing around there quite often around the time that they started that bike theft team last year, but not lately. Some of the 'pavement busters' gathering up fines like the one that copped me scooting along (both my legs over one side of the bike, one foot on pedal) near Old St Argos the other day could get up there instead.

    Damn right.

  • Just got my Brooks saddle nicked after locking my bicycle up in Hoxton Square to see a band. Only place I've had a part stolen such a short period of time (less than 2 hours) as previous times I've got parts stolen it's when I had my bicycle locked up all day.

  • Just out of interest, if the police accuse you of having a stolen bike, and they can prove it was stolen, what's the likely outcome? I thinking your buying a bike in good faith etc, not having any reason to believe it's stolen is no defence...

  • assist them as much as you can, I don't know what you can do about the money you paid for to be honest.

  • Pretty sure buying in good faith isn't a defense although I'm sure the police would understand if your story seemed honest and just take it off you. I think you might be able to take the seller to a civil/small claims court.

  • After lengthy talks with an officer from Kingston police last month about my stolen Allez Elite E5 he assured me that the offence of taking a stolen bike from someone in exchange for money IS no defence and can lead to prosecution under Section 22 of the Theft Act 1968:

    Dealing
The offence of handling is drafted widely enough to criminalise any dishonest dealing with property which has been come by dishonestly; for example, the original thief may also be convicted of a subsequent handling if he later arranges its sale. A codification of the methods of dealing has been suggested as receiving stolen goods, arranging to receive them, undertaking the keeping, removing, disposing of or realisation of stolen goods by or for the benefit of another person, or helping with any of those things.

Essentially at best someone who has knowingly or otherwise paid money for stolen goods (i.e a bike) has no rights to reimbursement of monies paid OR to keep said property.
At worst they could be taken to court charged with being accomplice to the perpetrator of the theft, having not checked the origins of the goods.

Either way, to sum it up - they end up with (at a minimum) no property paid for, and no money back.

The officer I have spoken to numerous times is STILL searching for my bike 2 months on just to boost peoples faith in the police a little ;)

  • My lovely Dolan cyclocross that I bought from someone on here a while ago was stolen in Oxford yesterday. This is what it looked like when I bought it, up to date and detailed description after the picture.
Any help leading to it's recovery will be rewarded!

[INDENT] One spoke missing from rear Ritchey wheel, front wheel is now a Shimano with non-bladed spokes after the front was also stolen about a year ago. Both have almost new Specialized Armadillo road tyres. Shimano Ultegra front and rear gear mechanisms, and black carbon RPM/FSA crank arms, with black Wellgo platform pedals with black Restrap toe straps.
Bright yellow handlebar tape and white Charge spoon saddle. One crosstop brake lever is fitted on the right hand side for the front brakes. Think there is a white sticker with the words ‘the belgian' on the seat tube (not the seatpost).

  • those claud butlers are the same as create bikes nowadays, wouldn't worry about it

  • Friend just said that the communal parking in his building was cleaned out last night.

His Marin Muirwoods went, locked with an Abus D lock (not sure which one, but it wasn't as chunky as the Granit X/54). So did any other reasonable looking bike. A few cropped locks littering the floor apparently.

He lives on Wick Lane between the A12 and the Olympic Site. Looks like he's about to find out whether it was worth paying for insurance.

  • I have communal parking here, would never leave my main bike in there. Would rather leave it in the street to be honest. :(

  • There is a guy selling a stolen medium grey Scott roadster around Mare `St E9 just now. Full 105, SPD's but a couple of hipster touches in the form of a Rolls and a pink Knog light which made me think it could be worth posting up here.

  • Hipster touches.

  • hipster touchés

Yes worst place to leave anything valuable...with the exception of a car I guess. Scooters, bikes, anything not not locked down will get stolen. Mate of mine had his shifters / cranks / derailleur/ brakes pinched when the frame & wheels were locked up with an X54 and a hefty motorbike chain. Shame everyone has to learn this the hard way.

  • Fucksticks. I've just had my back wheel nicked from outside Argos/the Coop at Old st. Just ducked out of work to go and get some fancy dress naff for Bestival, was in shop for 20 min (if that) and gone. Broad daylight. I even took my second lock out of my bag this morning. Twas locked through frame and front wheel. Why is the world full of cu*ts?

  • Shit news Kat. I have a Halo Aerorage rear doing nothing at the minute if you need/want something to keep you moving for the time being. I can't get the 18t off it though even with HTFU Big Ring aggression so you'd be stuck with that. Oh, and you'd need to get hold of the rubber bits. Let me know if you want it.

  • Has anyone had a Bianchi Pista stolen recently? This looks just a little suspect...
