Locks that work

  • For those of you after the Superdeals locks (the cheap ones that work, apparently), Wilson's in Peckham might have some in next week. The guy there (Steve?) is off to meet the importer later this week so he may have some in soon! I'm going back to check and will let y'all know as soon as I do.

  • Due to excellent feedback from Evil Rabbit, I have moved the Krabus XL303 from this list, and moved it to the Secondary Locks thread list. At one kilogram, it cant pretend to be as solid as similar locks, that weigh twice as much, and don't even have an alarm fitted.

    Relegated.

And just to further substantiate that, I borrowed some vernier calipers tonight and my suspicions are correct. The shackle is 17mm thick only with the rubber; 14mm bare.

With the alarm it is a good second lock option, just not a primary.

  • I personally don't believe in those skewer hublocks. My friend bought a bike off gumtree which had that on the front wheel and the seller did not provide the key (So much for buying a bike form gumtree). And I used a cheap cordless drill that loosened the skewer in less than 10 seconds. So you know, Waste of investment in my eyes. Better off buying a decent lock and lock up the wheels to your frame or something.

Obviously you need to be carrying a cordless drill about with you if your a thief but why bother going for the hard option when there are so many bikes out there locked up, with a front wheel that have a quick release skewer but isn't secured. My pitlock as secured my front wheel for nigh on two years without anyone interfering with it

  • but what about track nuts? seeing as this is londonsfixedgearsandsingularspeeds and many of said fixedgearsandsingularspeeds do not have skewers that can be replaced with more secure options?

Pitlock do special track nuts, but they're very expensive, and only fit 10mm axles, and (now corrected) our more common 9mm fronts.

  • Atomic22, a British company, will soon be providing useful alternatives also. Quality appears to be high.

  • The atomic 22 ones look great. Any ideas on what they'll cost and when they'll land?

Pitlock offer a 9mm option too.

  • I believe the Atomic22 solution is very new, and were at the last bike show (where LFGSS had a stand). I don't know about the availability. Maybe our site boss may come on here and say, as the company may have been keeping him in touch with developments. I know he was quite keen on them.

    Thanks OJAW for the correction.

So Pitlock offer security tracknuts in 9mm and 10mm. I'm pleased to be shown the light. :)

  • Welcome, I'm considering having to deal with the size of these things vs the security they offer, I already have a qr set on a geared bike.

  • Just bought an 80's raleigh stowaway for my girlfriend to keep at my flat but as I only use mini d-locks on my bike I need something that will secure a folding bike but isn't going to cost the earth (the bike was only £65)

I'm aware of all the options in the market just curious what people think is a suitable level of lock for this kind of thing.

here it is in all it's splendour...

for my money I'm thinking the mini evo long shackle (only £32/pretty lightweight) might be the way to go if I can persuade the GF to always make sure the lock is filled to prevent bottlejack attacks.

  • Im so sorry you feel this way about the Xena Bullet lock.

The bullet version you have is like that to allow the locks to be 'keyed alike', a requirement in the commercial lock market. Further it passes a number of standards that require testing for drilling and we can assure you it is designed to resist very aggressive drill attacks.

If you want any more help or advice please call out sales team on 01256 704909

Pinhead now do a solid axle lock - I haven't seen them for sale in any UK store though, and getting one made up to match an existing key and posted to the UK is pricey. Still, could be a goer.

  • Am also less than impressed with the Xena Bullet XUL (I have the small length version). Yes it looks imposing (even sexy), but the lock mechanism is very fiddly/annoying and constantly comes out when you don't need it, and just looks like a weak mechanism. Some toerag might find the thick shackle very hard to cut, but I think drilling the lock would not be hard - but then I am no season criminal or locksmith, so am happy to be contradicted.

The second is a reply to the post above. I invited Xena to the forum so that they could answer queries, or allay concerns. The replier is the Xena distributor.

  • Thanks Howard. With this many options for security track nuts, I'll add a section to cover those......in the list.

Good on you for replying and am happy to hear the lock is resistant to drilling - please forgive my non-professional comment/concern. Am glad, as it does protect in my shed my most expensive bike.

I do stand by the fact that is the most fiddly/annoying of all my D-locks (7 different ones) to lock and unlock.

  • I'm hesitant to drag up the other thread on replacement keys for Abus locks... so here goes. Would anyone care to order one for me through their local Abus dealer and I can pay you plus a commission via Paypal?

I live in Dublin where there is no such thing as an Abus dealer.

    I have the code card.

    Please!
    Cheers!

  • Locks that don't work.

My Fahg which has just decided to jam.

My Fahg which has just decided to jam.

my ny3000 jammed last winter after getting soaked whilst locked up at football and then sitting about unused for a few days after. unlocked it then pulled the two parts apart using my foot rammed in the loop. then sprayed shed loads of wd40 into and left it to sit overnight. if you cant get it apart try the spraying wd40 bit on its own into first.

    Will do.

Probably not down to the fahg, just the dodgy fecker who sold it to me.

  • On the Atomic22 website they slated release for Summer of this year.
Of course it's a little foolish to hold out hope for a punctual release as it seems they are incredibly focused on detail. I'm definitely willing to wait, but from a selfish point of view I hope I don't have to wait too long so I can leave one of the locks at home!
