Laptops don't have many USB ports so this is a way of increasing them. By the time you have your Printer, I-Phone, mouse, etc etc you've gobbled up all the uSB ports on your PC
So if you were short of USB ports on your PC, you'd plug the usb hub connector into one of your PC ports, and the USB Hub itself will give you 4 more USB ports to be able to plug into, problem solved.
I use el cheapo Poundland USB powered ones though.....although the mains powered ones are alleged to be better.
