Wanted: Wolber 36h 700c rim (like Modele 58)

  • I've noticed a weird cavity appearing on my front rim which cant be a good thing (see below). I am not, nor do I know any rim dentists that can fix this so I'm looking to replace the rim with something similar.

The rim is a Wolber Super Champion Modele 58, 36h, 700c. It's similar to the rim in this ad http://www.lfgss.com/thread67997.html but unfortunately Fade's not in London anymore

Does anyone have anything available in London (built up or not) that I could switch out onto my wheel?

    Thankyouplease

  • Can't help, but I'd maybe borrow a needle-file in the meantime and try and smooth them in the hope that it will help to stop further deterioration.

  • Reckon it'll survive 400km in some fairly mountainous Spanish terrain?...

I wouldn't chance it. Personally wouldn't ride it at all once that appears.

  • Although it did make it to Paris a couple of weeks ago...has anyone actually had a rim break on them before?

smart money has to be on changing the rim but I'm getting close to leaving...

  • There doesn't appear to be a crack as such to the rim and is a gradual thing rather than a sudden failure so reckon you'd be okay but like above, get a file to smooth down any edges. I think you could use a metal filler putty if you really wanted to. http://www.wickes.co.uk/metal-repair-epoxy-putty/invt/243792/?source=123_4

Yes. After hitting a pothole on an already weakened rim. Luckily it was a back wheel and just about held out and didn't collapse. Yours looks to be on the front wheel though? I wouldn't mess with dodgy front wheels. If they go then your steering is gone or worse you go over the bars.

  • tis the front wheel and is more of a cavity then a crack but it could easily propagate. Sounds like you dodged a bullet A EF - perhaps I just should not stand in the firing line...

So back to the OP does anyone in London have a 700c 36h box section rim (built up or not) that might suit? I guess it's also similar to some mavics (i.e. MA2) and other box section rims...

  • Maybe I was being too specific - I'd be interested in any 700c, 36hole box rim front wheels...

    So whadda you got?

  • Go and buy a Sputnik or Grizzly if you're skint, or a DTswiss tourer if you're flash.

I saw a large dusty pile of Super Champions in France I shoulda bought... I guess they're classy looking, but essentially obselete. In the end, you may as well just go buy a sputnik.
