Leave the tyre on the radiator for 30 mins
Leave the wheel outside for 30 mins. This only works in the winter.

Man up. Do it until you have no finger nails and your fingers are a bloody pulp. Do this enough times in your life and one day you will be a master of all tyre/rim combos and a fascinating object for the wimins and your sex life will be great.

who applies the brake and how long is the cable-you surely won't be able to go v.far?

The cable is about 500 foot long. When I need to stop I just call the little man who lives in the loft and he pulls the lever for me.
thought it looked a bit rubbish for removing sand
LBS used to have EPIC pedros workshop tyre levers for when MTB tubeless came about, they were made from steel coated in black 'teflon' paint, were about 10" long with handles. They were lost to the great floods, but they were the only thing I could get my tyres on and off with, a little bit unwieldy for the average evening ride :/
