Just had one o fthe most depressing meals of my life.I was in the middle of eating a Chinese curry that tasted like it had come out of a tin in a nasty cheapo Chinese café in Southwark with a couple colleagues and I got suddenly overwhelmed by this massive wave of sadness. For some reason the horrible food and conversation about other dodgy fast food brought back a really strong memory of being taken to a Wimpy by my dad when I was very little. Must have been under 6. I remember being absurdly excited and a bit afraid and the memory of what hopelessly timid and cringingly shy child I was, and how fierce and grumpy my dad was with us just really got me down. I’ve only just got over it. Middle class problems eh?
Cheeringly though, my dad also featured in one of the best meals i've had a while this weekend. After a visit to the burbs (and his allotment) on Saturday i came away with 2 carrier bags bulging with home-grown french and runner beans, courgettes, a cauliflower, half a red cabbage, three big potatoes, handfuls of garlic and another whole bag of kale.
cooked down the green and baby yellow courgettes with olive oil, lemon juice lots of garlic a touch of red chilli. cooked them down into a spreadable mushy dip-like consistency. skinned and broke up four cooking chorizo and fried off with a huge pile of the trimmed and chopped french and runner beans. Finished off with tsatziki and wholemeal pittas charred on dry grill pan. Was absolutley delicious.
