There are some nice looking bags on VO:

I quite like the Ostrich handlebar bag myelf.

Carradice ones (look a little homemade)
My Carradice is a saddle bag, and it's also pretty battered, but homemade really isn't the word I'd choose. Plus they have a rep, which says something imo.
The VO stuff looks nice and sounds like what you're after.

Yes, I'll have a look into the VO ones - they look pretty good.
I've got a carradice saddle bag too (zip roll or something similar) and it's very good. Just thought the bar bag didn't look quite as polished as the Brooks (though it obviously is cheaper).

Has anyone had any experience using handlebar bags with bars other than drops? I'm looking to put some on my nitto northroad bars, and I'm worried about the sweep getting in the way. I am looking for something larger than the average barrel bags (volume of about 4-5 liters). I also dont have a rack to mount them on.

I had a Jitensha bag on my bike for awhile, it has upright handlebars but they don't sweep forward as far as the Nitto North Road. However, since my bike is in the 59cm territory it didn't matter because the bars rode above the bag. Of course, the bag was mounted to a rack, which I'd highly recommend; most people prefer not to have the added steering input from a purely handlebar mounted bag. Your rack options are varied and you needn't get something mounted way down the fork. Depending on your brake type, some can be attached to cantilever studs, some may use clamps, et cetera.
The Brooks Cornwall bag looks amazing:

It would fit really nicely on my new tourer, and the first trip it'll be making is to Cornwall, so it'll obviously work well too (er...)
However, at £250 it's a little on the steep side. The only equivalents I know of are the Carradice ones (look a little homemade), and the ortliebs (look totally different). I guess this Gilles Bertroud is closer (http://www.theoldbicycleshowroom.co.uk/gilles-berthoud-canvas-handlebar-bag-gb905-1692-p.asp), but to me looks a tad twee.
Are there any others that people know of that look the part but don't cost quite as much?
