Don't think there's ever been one.
Steamrollers were never at common as they are now. Good idea let's see if we can fit one in the busy ride calendar -
• #728
There were such suggestion of others (like the Merican) but I feel it won't be as fun to single out those who doesn't have the grace to own a steamroller.
David, slam that stem!

• #729
we wouldn't have to exclude - we could open it up to all kinds of Surly bikes...? ;)
-
• #730
Ooh does that mean I can come with the Crosscheck then?
-
• #731
Other than my own, I saw a couple of Crosschecks at the Dyno. Were you on one of 'em ed...

Don't give me a hard time. There's only so many hooks to hang bikes from and I've run out, big time.

Nope, was on the butchered Brooklyn, Can't do the DD on the Crosscheck as it got geared (difficult on night time) and the elusive crankset probably also a contribution factor too.

David, slam that stem!
Ed, do you mean shorten the stem? It is just perfect reach for me.
Have removed the brake too which looks even better -

I'm confused Ed why is it difficult to ride gears at night time?
-
• #736
The DD route is unknown to me, I can maintain a decent rpm without putting as much effort on the pedals as I would on a geared/singlespeed bicycle, so once the terrain changed slightly unexpectedly, I won't have to work hard to overcome it, just push it a little bit more.
Usually I'd be able to compensate the gearing before hitting the ascent/descent, but it's not easy to tell at night time.

headset spacer actually.
hypocrite because I tend to have a lots to compensate for my short reach (about the same as your).

So at night on an unknown route you would advise people not to ride geared then Ed?
-
• #738
I'd advised people to take whatever they feel comfortable on.
I took the fixed wheel because I felt it was perfect for such ride, at least it was for me.
-
• #739
Me too, That route is perfect for riding fixed day or night since the hills were short and low.
-
• #740
I hadn't rode the route before and loved doing it geared. Seeing all the people spinning like mad down the hills made me very grateful for my gears.
That and gears for long routes just make sense oh and the fact I wanted to ride my audax bike.

Well to paraphrase surly's advice (posted up-thread)
The best bike for any job is the one you like to do it on
So we're all right

Liking the idea or a 'Surly' ride!
-
• #743
I've often been described as 'surly'. Can I come?
-
• #744
Does anyone have a 59cm Steamroller and need a 56cm? Surely someone else was as stupid as me, in the opposite direction? Mine is black and in good nick, with the usual scuffs etc, no structural damage. Would prefer black but consider any colour.

My frame has arrived now. took it out of the box for a peek and was about to start figuring out how to get it home when I remembered it needs to stay here at work until the headset arrives and I can get it fitted. which is probably next week now :(
cue more waiting.

@mez - the decals are just stickers right, what did you do to get rid of the sticky stuff left behind?
Got rid of mine today. Just heat them up with a hair dryer and scrape them of with a credit card. Clean up with with gt-85/whatever-to-clean-glue-stuff - done.
It looks so much better without decals!

• #747
I'm in for a Surly ride. I'll contact the Surly distributors when I get back to the UK and let them know what we're planning. They might want to be involved/help.

I am out if this is a night event. Day time, please.

This is exactly what I did. The decals are not that nice imho.
The picture is from last spring when there was still snow on the ground. I do not use Gatorskins on snowy roads, but this is just a picture after the assembly.
I am getting my bullhorn soon, lets see how my Stroller is going to cope with that.

I agree - day ride.
When shall we do it? Where shall we go?
^ Nice, David.
The search didn't tell me - has there ever been a forum Steamroller ride? If not, we should organise one!
