What's your favourite gear ratio?

One will work with 9speed the other 8. There is some backwards compatibility which I don't know off the top off my head.

Look up 3/32 and 1/8th chains. Sheldon brown's site has great info.

You want 1/8th (the wider of the 2) if either your chainring or cog are 1/8th.

Either a 752 or 799 chain - you just multiply the c/ring and sprocket teeth to get the correct number of links. Gold conducts power better than silver, but only when the drivetrain is completely clean with a minimal coating of very light lubricant.

I know there is a lot of info in this thread, but as a newbie what size rear cog would you guys recommend with a 52t chain ring? for daily use including the odd hill.

50/17 for commuting and 50/14 for everything else.

If you want to learn to pedal properly use something a lot spinnier. Only benefit of a masher gear is you might get from A to B quicker initially.
