louis ^ please read the first post on the first page of this thread. If anyone does use that chain, they would be pretty brave to admit it here.
It is definitely NOT recommended. -

thanks GA2G, i appreciate how this thread works. but just 'cos its not there doesn't mean its NECESSARILY rubbish, it may have just not made it on the radar. I also can't find any mention of it specifically being shit, hence asking the question.
It would only be a secondary lock for me, but if it's quite that bad, il take your word for it.

I don't mean to cause offence, but if a lock can be snipped in a few seconds, then I will say its not up to the standard required.
The chain you have suggested has 8mm links. Even 9mm, and 11mm link chains are fairly easily cut with bolt cutters, so imagine the time an 8mm would take to get cut.
There have been calls for secondary lock recommendations list/thread, on a few occasions, so I'll now rethink this, and see if I should start a sister thread to this one.

To all those that think its really hilarious to derail a thread that is innovative and helpful in cycle security, maybe its not as funny as all that. Please delete your posts, as they don't help what has been an on-topic discussion for more than 1500 posts (31 pages).
Thanks in advance.

In all seriousness GA2G your threads are great. I've got loads of info from them while I've been a member.
Only problem is that noobs don't UTFS. The post I deleted was typical of many posts on this forum. It's not against the rules to have a bit of a laugh on here. Maybe with a bit of witty commentary it might encourage people to look through the thread before they post.

My appreciation to all that removed the derail posts, and thank you for your own efforts in keeping other cyclists safer and better informed.
You're all good eggs. -

Added SOLD SECURE GOLD (bicycle rating) to the list.....only to U-locks though.
Useful for those that value that for insurance purposes. -

For insurance, assuming your bike can be replaced relatively straightforwardly, surely the best advice is to buy the cheapest lock your insurance allows for.
By buying insurance, you're basically assuming it's going to get nicked anyway.
I see this list more as a list of locks to self-insure with.

I agree with that 100%. But others have noted that they wish insurance, and the insurers have stated that the locks need to be Sold Secure Gold, to be allowable. Its just me being helpful to others, even if I don't subscribe to their way of thinking.

Any reason the Magnum Blok UL X200 is not in the 16mm section ?
I have it (as well as some of the others) and it is a good bargain at £20. Don't know how good the lock is, but it seems relatively well made even compared to my Abus X54 and Fahg. Just very heavy at 3kg and IMO with too bigger shackle gap unless you have a lamppost and a mountain bike with fat tyres.
Having locked up my family cycle stable over the past months with various U-locks (most on the list), the budget Blok is one of the ones am impressed with.
Unlike the Kabrus XL303 - I need to borrow a micrometer but I don't believe it really is 17mm thick, I think they have included the rubber - can someone who has one check it? Plus the hinge looks extremely vulnerable and I doubt it would stand up to much brute force. One I only use a second or third lock. IMO better to use one of their alarm padlocks in conjunction with a better lock.
Am also less than impressed with the Xena Bullet XUL (I have the small length version). Yes it looks imposing (even sexy), but the lock mechanism is very fiddly/annoying and constantly comes out when you don't need it, and just looks like a weak mechanism. Some toerag might find the thick shackle very hard to cut, but I think drilling the lock would not be hard - but then I am no season criminal or locksmith, so am happy to be contradicted.

I would not see any of the locks here, even the mighty Fahg, as "self-insurance" - it is just tougher than most others, not impervious. 3 minutes with a power tool and even it will give up.
And, having once cut off an abus lock from our fence with a power tool and not one passerby stopping to ask or taking any interest, I am not fooled into thinking good locks are my insurance. Tip - put on an orange safety vest and no one will think anything of it.
Am not against good locks (in fact am a strong advocate) or do I foolishly think insurance is my savour (I have never got any true value back from an insurer!), just that they are complimentary. No way am going to "self-insure", even just for 3 minutes, my Pinarello with a couple of pieces of metal.

Pleased to list it now. The only thing holding that up was that I could never find a proper shop that sold them - only eBay and Amazon, and I won't list either as a shop, as they often are a collection of disparate businesses. I've found a business that sells them, so in the list it goes.
As far as the rest of your post is concerned, I'm very impressed. I'll respond to some, if not all, of it later. Thanks though for your excellent input.

gutted, i really dont wanna have to carry around 2 D locks :(
oh well, id rather have a secure bike....
One good lock for the rear wheel and frame, and a pitlock for the front is a pretty good compromise.

Due to excellent feedback from Evil Rabbit, I have moved the Krabus XL303 from this list, and moved it to the Secondary Locks thread list. At one kilogram, it cant pretend to be as solid as similar locks, that weigh twice as much, and they don't even have an alarm fitted.
Relegated.
I'd really like to know this also.
