These situations suck mostly because in order to move on you need to distance yourself from the subject of your affections and in the cases where its a person who is a good friend, its really hard to do that.
Or at least thats what I found when I've been in similar situations in the past.
Even then there is no guarantee that you'll feel differently so I'm inclined to go with the put your cards on the table gambit if you feel that it woulnd't damage your friendship.
