  • Very very sad.
Best wishes to all who were close to her.

  • Sad news. R.I.P
    Ride safe everyone.

  • that is a shocking/terrible stat.

no, that is actually about average, possibly even a "good" number. i note that olaf says there have actually been 12 fatal (to cyclist) crashes this year. i have previously discussed cycling fatalities with him, and at that time, i wrote:

"...statistically speaking, if annual deaths are modelled using a poisson distribution, as we did, one would expect between 8 deaths and 25 deaths given that the average underlying rate was 15 deaths per year."

(actually, i think the rate was 16.7 deaths per year).

  • ps - i'm not trying to make any suggestions about this particular incident: of course it is a tragedy and my condolences go to the victim's relatives. i will keep on campaigning for improvements in the transport infrastructure of london that may help prevent such incidents in the future; however, i remain constantly disappointed when comparing the number of people who comment on these sorts of threads with the numbers who actually seem to make any effort to stop the threads in the first place.

I wasn't sure what sort of thing I could do to help, then I realised that a FoI request to the council (an, in this case TFL tto, since it's a red route) asking if they had any formal review system following Fatal Incidents might help, so I stuffed a couple in.

If there is a review system, I'd be interested to see what it produces, if not, I think that there should be some way for Public Bodies to look at their road layoutsfollowing this sort of incident, as it should flag up an area of posiable higher risk that might be improvable. It might well be that there is no improvement that can be made, but I do feel they should at least check.

  • Jeez. Thats so upsetting. Poor women. And the witnesses too. How does anyone ever get over seeing something like that ?

    You don't.

  • sadly it is. rode past here in the afternoon and po po confirmed it was a fatality. at which point he made a snarky comment about bicycle helmets.

    sad.

Slam the ball back into his half by stating "women wearing skirts are asking for it ...right?"

    RIP

  • "It was only around 60% finished when cut by Mayor Boris Johnson in 2008, with the incomplete 40% comprising a large number of major barriers to safe cycling."

  • So sad RIP

    Here's your chance to help!

Following the death of cyclist Johannah Bailey on 31 July, a meeting with TfL officials has been arranged to press for improved safety measures for cyclists in the area of Cycle Route 5 where she died. The meeting is scheduled for 12 September

TfL officials say their work is “data led” -- essentially, not enough people have died or had life-changing injuries for them to take action. Having secured a meeting with them nonetheless, it is crucial that we present as much evidence as possible to show why changes here are essential. The police also have asked for copies of correspondence into safety issues here, which they will include in their collision investigation report. Police reports can mandate changes to areas deemed unsafe.

We need to collect as much evidence as possible to strengthen our case. Have you – whether as a cyclist, driver or pedestrian -- seen or experienced near misses in this area? Have you had or witnessed an accident which went unreported? (The area where Johannah died, together with reports from many witnesses, is shown here on Cycle-Intelligence. Cycle Route 5 crosses this area, heading north/south, and is notorious locally for the dangerous maneuvres needed to make right hand turns in both directions.)

The area under discussion is the South Circular from the junction of Rudloe and Poynders Road SW4 through to the turnoff from Cavendish Road into Klea Avenue. It includes all the entry and exit points to the area: Cavendish, Hazelbourne, Englewood and Abbeville Roads, and Klea Ave as well as the housing estate entrance. (Please see the map attached. The red rectangle marks the spot where Johanna Bailey died

If you have information on road and cyclist safety issues in this area, please email it to TootingCyclist@gmail.com. Be sure to include your full name, postal address and email address or contact phone number in the body of the message both for verification and so that you can be contacted if further details are required. Your contact details will be used only for the purposes of this campaign. You will not hear from us again unless you request follow up information.

If you have information to contribute, we hope to hear from you by 10 September. Those meeting with TFL officials on 12 September include Lambeth Councillor Christine Barratt, who has been instrumental in arranging the meeting, another local cyclist and myself and a formal representative from the London Cycling Campaign.

Please forward this message to anyone else who might be interested and able to contribute relevant information.
