will the start up cd that you get with a new mac work on the old one?

I'd be careful here! If you don't really know what you are doing you could make a real mess of things and lose some important files...

Onyx and Cleanmymac are good for freeing up space, I bet you have 6 gigs of temp files!

A cheap external HD for photos/videos/pictures could be used to free up space too...
