Is it welded by the forks?
Or is it hanging on through the stem?yeah the stem is holding it all up.
the fork is secured with cable ties! -

Do you think someone nicked his front wheel whilst he was shopping, so decided to improvise getting home?

Posted yesterday in probably the wrong section, but spotted a lass on a sweet shopper style ride near holborn tube on Monday with white skyways on!!
Fancy building something like this for my girl, have looked at a few and Raleigh did one with a steel 20" wheel, so guess that would be the perfect donor for the build. Did anyone on here build the bike I spotted or know about it, was a real purdy looking ride.
Any info much appreciated, not been a participant for a while on here, just been busy with other stuff.

This could probably go into 'current projects'.
There are a lot of shopper bikes out there and the vast majority are awful, so be careful what you buy. Raleigh Twenties are supposed to be the best, and Sheldon's page about Raleigh Twenties is useful.

It was the Twenty I was looking at. Cheers for the Sheldon link, been bookmarked for many a year.

I've just bought a Raleigh twenty to do up for my daughter. Was thinking of skyways too.
Loved Alex's moulton project.

Just a word of warning. Most early Shoppers are designed for 20 x 1 3/8" wheels which are quite a bit bigger than 20" BMX wheels such as Skyways. If you try to fit Skyways to one of these bikes, the brakes won't reach, even with long reach callipers. You need to look out for a late Shopper preferably from the 80s.
See here (20 x 1 3/8 in the fractional table and 20 x 1.5 - 20 x 2.125 in the decimal table)

Okay looking at Sheldon's Raleigh Twenty page there are what he calls loooong reach calipers available but to get a nice fit with mudguards n everything, I'd go for a later model.

Yep, did wonder about this and whether you'd need spacers, cold setting (bending)! Thanks for the heads up.

So you would need a brake with a drop of about 23mm more than what was on the bike previously. There are units out there that go as deep as 95mm, so, no problem. -

I have a spare set of Tektro long reach, hopefully these might work. I may just try with one wheel first. Pimp that shopper!

I have a Raleigh twenty fixed! Still thinking about the crankset but with Raleigh having their propertary threads 26tpi rather than the standard 24tpi is bait more difficult and expensive than usual! Also you'll have to file the drop out to fit mags on! And as for braking goes on mags with long reach calipers is next to nothing! I'd recommend you go for a Dawes kingpin if you can get one as their threading are akk standard and lighter than the Raleigh 20! I still have my twenty but looking for a kingpin for more modifications! Hope this help if you need any more info or help let me know!
That's a picture of mine with mags now gone as I built a 48h fixed hub, re thread steering and got a bmx brake! -

I have had my eye on one of these for months but need a bike clear out first. I have watched them go for 7quid to 70 now. They are in vouge!

yeahnerdz, loving it - exactly what I had in mind. Jersey, that's the mutts too.
Wanna do this more and more. On the B/B, might try the Sheldon idea of a Phils set of cups on a 72 cartridge. Will see, also, thought I could fabricate a bracket like on Sheldon's Twenty page to extend the calliper from the bracket - http://sheldonbrown.com/home-drop.html -

@tomiskinky the phill wood+ plus shimano works however is expensive! Most of the cottered cranks works a treat if you look after them properly! There's a few other solutions o the bb problem and one of them is to get a new spindle 7 Japanese as their longer than usual but not everytime works! Depending on the year of the bike the bb width can vary from 71mm to 76mm, mine is the latest one! I managed to get a cotterless spindle to fit the twenty adding the cages for the ball bearing gave me some extra mm and the spindle fits perfect! However with the length of it the chain line for a fixed conversion was way out 5cm + ! About the steering I'm sure a good lbs should be able to re thread to take standard 24tpi headset as te Raleigh twenty comes with the funny nylon bushing which is not bad but not the best! Good luck withthe project! I'd you need any help let me know! I'll post a picture of my recent update on my twenty shortly!

Might do that fella if I get stuck. Look forward to the pics. So, you think a Kingpin is better as has standard threads etc? hmm, I'll keep and eye out. Cheers.
good call Balki! dope film - the link to the whole film is on the thread for anyone who's interested
