Shifting onto top ring, help

Posted on
  • Need a bit of help please, anyone who knows about front mechs. I think my BB is just too wide/long and is stopping my front mech shifting onto the top ring (of two). If you look in this photo you can see that there's a fair old gap between the chainstay and rings, does this look too much?
The mech is 'topped out' and I've taken the limit screw out as far as it'll go but it just won't reach far enough to push the chain onto the ring.
Is there anything else I can do to help it along other than get a shorter BB? It's like I need to 'move' the chain guide of the front mech further out.
Currently got an exage on there, about to put a 600 on. Do mechs come in different sizes?
(Please excuse what may be some very stupid questions above.)
    Thanks,
    Doug

  • Meh. Taking it to Vaidas, this is what LBS' are for.

  • it does sound like your bottom bracket is too long.

front mechs do come as a double or a triple but i dont this thats your problem, sounds like your bottom bracket is a tad too long

your picture dont come up aswell :)

  • May alse be worth checking the alignment of the deraillier against the chainrings. I've got a Veloce triple chainset and front mech and used to have real issues getting onto the large chainring. I fiddled about moving the mech up and down the seatpost which seemed to have little impact, I then started to 'toe' the mech in and out until I found a position where it shifts correctly, but doesn't touch the chainrings.

See section 2 of front deraillier adjustement: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html

  • Thanks chaps, I actually took it down Vaidas later and he confirmed that the BB was too long. I bought it from the forum without checking size and it's a 122. Should be on a 113. I am an idiot...
Everything is aligned, the mech just can't stretch that far, poor chap.
