Riding as a group has a very different dymnamic to riding on your own. Your 'small fat shoal' of riders will cause an overtaking car to veers wide on overtaking, when there are groups of cyclists on the road in both directions this presents an opportunity for risk to groups travelling in an opposite direction to you.
When we are riding in groups of more than 10/12 we always single up on a shout of car back on busy roads and if the traffic is particularly bad and it's a big group we will often split in to two groups with about 100 yards between us so that cars have less of a stream of cyclists to pass at any one time and regroup on quieter stretches.
It's not about compromising your right to be on the road, more a consideration of other road users and being part of 'normal' traffic [as opposed to some alien road hogging creatures]
