Perhaps approach a local engineering company or welder/brazer and see what they think. If they're not transferable, presumably they'd also be able to fabricate some for you.
I know that until the 40s or 50s, Raleigh used different cable-ends to everyone else, and that you could buy them separately and braze them on yourself, so I guess it's feasible.

Yep, sounds like a good call. I'll do some Googling. I am supremely irritated with myself.

PM Hilary Stone - he may have something the back of a lock-up somewhere.

I'll give him a try - just that the last couple of times I've asked him for stuff he hasn't replied...

Hmm. He has had some reliability issues in the past, but I've never had any problems with anything I've acquired from him. You can but ask.

And indeed I shall. Thanks chap.

Also PM Pistoffski - you never know what he might have in his various boxes of delights.

Another good shout. Got to see him this week about something anyway. Ta.
After possibly the most irritating bike fail I've ever experienced I need someone who can make bespoke brake cables.
I was applying literally the finishing touch to a period-perfect '79 Peugeot build on Saturday - adjusting a pair of NOS Mafac Competition brakes - and (here comes the dumb ass bit) accidentally cut through the straddle cable while chopping the main brake cable for length. I can't even begin to remember the flood of profanity that ensued, but it left me stuck as those straddle cables are rare as an appropriate cliche that doesn't involve a wooden horse doing a shit.
Anyway, the soldered-on ends to this short straddle cable are different - not only to each other but also to any others I've seen for a while - and I'm wondering whether I could get someone to reuse these on a new bit of cable to resolve my stupid mistake. Otherwise I face buying another pair of calipers just for the wires, if you see what I mean.
Oh, and the moral of this little tale? NEVER be tempted to play cycle mechanic after lunch at the pub. However small the job...
