I used open source ones on my jaunt down to Spain over the past month - very very very good. A little bit fiddly to set up compared to the paid for ones but really not that hard if you've got the slightest bit of technical nous.
My problems arose from having too long a route and the device freaked out so it involved basically making a large number of overlapping routes which worked fine.
