  • Yeah, how much does the chain move up and down? It might be ok.

You can also file the axle.

  • how far out is it without the half link? is it a new chain? have you tried it with a chain that has already been used fixed and "stretched" already?

or why not just gear up by 1 or down by 1 on the cog?

  • file the axles as suggested on the first page, that way you dont damage the frame.

  • Thanks for all the advice guys. In the end I geared down by 1 at the back, removed the half-link and then filed the dropouts deeper and slightly forward (by about 3mm). Worked a treat, though perhaps it's a little too tight now (there's a slight noise on the drivetrain now and it doesn't coast as well as before). Still, it seems that too tight isn't such a bad thing, and if needs be then I can always get the file out again!

  • if it is a new chain, it will soon stretch a bit

  • ^Controversial.

  • wow, that's better news than expected...
but still, if i take a look at my FixMeUp-Graph, i can't really run (just almost) any gear right?
I would still be limited by the vertical blue line, but then maybe with a difference of 1 or 2 mm.?

In the end i got a pretty tight chain by using a halflink and a magic gear. Got a spare sprocket laying around for when my chain stretches (if it does..)

  • Ill say it again - i love your bike! (mainly the saddle)

it is a nice build indeed.... as for chain, you could always swap out for a regular chain but use a single 1/2 link... that way, half as much wear or "stretch"

Thanks mate (again), I'll stop posting it in different threads now :P

'Bout those Gilles Berthouds, never understood why they aren't as popular as them Blooks. Maybe it's a patriotic thing...

  • Hi guys,
I've got a frame which has horizontal dropouts and I was wondering if it was safe to put a fixed wheel on it, because I have one which doesn't seem safe to leave on. What are my options?
    Cheers

  • are they vertical or horizontal dropouts? you've mentioned both.

if they are horizontal fine you'll have no issues.

if vertical you'll need to find a magic gear or get an eccentric bottom bracket.

  • cheers mate, gonna look for an eccentric bb :)
