I know people who were in jail on at least three or four occasions and their criminal record (I've seen the CRB check) has few pages. One works for the NHS and the other is an author and a Met's consultant.
Both say they're were horrible people and would admit they were scum and nuisance to the society. They've managed to turn their lives around, but wouldn't have a problem to admit they were scum when they were. They din't need any excuses made for them, just a bit of help and guidance.
