Wanted: Russian threaded headset.

Posted on
  • I need a russian threaded headset in good condition, or if someone can point me in the direction of a website/shop that would have one, i would be eternally greatful.

  • What is Russian threading ?

  • never heard of it. Educate me.

  • Really ? Russian frame & fork, does it have a normal threaded steerer ? I was led to beleive it was a different threading.

  • I guess you refer to 26 mm threading instead of the regular 1".
I might me able to help you out.
Perhaps I don't have a full set, but certainly some parts. Thanks to comrade / товарищ Scorch...
    KhVZ frame and fork ?

Requires metric balls, which I don't have. But you can find them at several places or use imperial size balls just a littlebit smaller.

if so the good news is you might be able to get a normal headset on it.

the thread i got on mine was wider than a uk thread but not by much. (26mm minus 25.4 mm = 0. 6mm difference).

i got an english 1" steerer die (your LBS will have one) they probably call it a thread cutter . you can just go over the existing thread with that and you'll have cut your self the standard thread onto the steerer.

bb was english so no probs.

the head tube had a slightly higher inner diameter than standard (meaning a loose fit of the headset in the frame)- this can just be taken up with coke can shim

  • number6 that's exactly what someone told me to do today, gonna see if i can borrow the die nut or get a bike shop to do it.

  • die nut alone will not work as you are creating new thread not just chasing - it'll need to be in the proper handle so it will locate and start properly,

use plenty of oil and 2 steps forward 1 step back movement

it's forceful to cut 25.4 over what is really a 26.0 steerer, so make sure you brace forks at the crown or low on the steerer

    • bracing lower down the forks (i.e. bracing the blades) may bend the blades of the fork as you apply the torsion. so if you go to a shop watch they are doing it right

Yeah man, got it. Used to have to alter loads of threads on plant machinery when i was a fitter just to get stuff up and running, so i'm well aware that it's a big ask of the tooling. It's kind of a beater so although i don't really want bent forks as long as it rides straight no-handed i'm happy ! All this just for matching lugs eh !
