If it's just me I stand corrected. Anyone else?
I think the joking is just a nervous reaction to the horror of it. I was joking about it earlier, too, although that mood has left me completely. I have to say that the jokes are starting to annoy me now, too.

Starting in Leeds...
"100 young people had gathered following the confirmed shooting of a man."I've counted 14 cars and three vans, police are taking no chances here, but the youths have dispersed down side streets, yet there is a palpable tension here tonight."
The police have not revealed details of the shooting, but say the man has been taken to Leeds General Infirmary.
Mr Fowler said he's heard local reports from youths that the man shot was injured during a drive-by shooting." -

HOUSE PARTY chez moi. NOW!
Bring fire extinguishers. please.lock the bikes next to the bins right?

Shite, that big one in Croydon has spread to the next block.
That fire reminds me a bit of the fire that destroyed Gibbons in Hackney a few years ago, which apparently was arson, too. A local landmark and much missed.

the jokes are part and parcel of how London and by extension the UK deals with any major event.

UK police force in a shambles. They're first to harass and push people around, but lack balls when they actually need to protect people and property. Water canons and baton rounds. Every other country would go for it already.
They can't just seat there and watch people torch buildings. I don't feel safe here.

Just got back in. Cycled over onto Peckham Rye about 2 mins away by bike. Have a few snaps on my phone. Basically the crowd there was all young and excited, the vibe was like completely powerless young men (and a few girls but mainly men) suddenly felt like they had power and people (the police and media) were sitting up and noticing them. But the violence was all mindless and pointless. It was like a game for them. Bricks were being thrown through the windows of the Burger King (I shed a flame grilled tear) while riot police lined up and slowly marched forward. It was all a bit crap - like snotty teenagers rebelling against weary parents. But where the f*ck are their parents?!
