A collision with a bus

Just passed this now, looked horrendous, and a horrible amount of rubberneckers sitting around watching.

Any detail on what the bike was...?
I'm sure we've all got a lot of friends who ride that stretch daily.

Just awful. RIP. The fear of being car doored terrifies me. This sounds awful. Wish more was done to educate drivers about this.

actually, i think this is really a lesson to cyclists: ride in the middle of the lane, and give yourself ample space for unexpected things to happen.
note: i am not trying to blame the cyclist here, but i think there is also a bit of a culture amongst cyclists of blaming "someone else". i think the cycle instructors on this forum will agree that teaching is to ride a good meter or so away from the edge of the road, just in case this sort of thing happens. and, unfortunately, it does happen - when i was researching cycle deaths recently, i remember noticing that one of the worst crashes involved 4 different vehicles, and apparently was caused by someone in a parked car opening a car door onto a cyclist.... fortunately, i am happy to say that cyclist deaths caused in this manner are extremely few.
note: i am sure that both whoever it was that opened the car door, as well as the bus driver, feel absolutely terrible this evening, and my thoughts are with them, as well as the family and friends of the deceased.

RIP, it's awful to hear that a car door looks like the cause of this - terrible news.

Condolences to the family and friends.
The subject of where to ride has been active on this thread recently.
http://www.lfgss.com/thread65085.html
Sadly so few cyclists, even very experienced ones, seem to realise the danger of being in the door zone or they are sort of aware of it but do not, for whatever reason, then ride outside it. Maybe the other thread is a better place to continue this discussion.

very sad. and yet another death that could have been prevented by good road design. if there's anywhere in london that has plenty of room for high-quality cycle tracks that would allow cyclists to stay away both from car doors and buses (and the cycle traffic to justify that), it's holloway rd...

I commented on this incident in another thread. Someone posted a more gruesome account...
https://www.lfgss.com/thread10227-3.htmlI read the more detailed news article this morning:
Investigators said initial reports suggested the cyclist had collided with an open car door prior to hitting a single decker bus. The driver of that car, an Audi, was arrested and is in police custody tonight. A post-mortem is expected to take place on Monday. Next of kin have been informed.
Not to point blame here but this highlights the importance of visibility and assertive cycling (avoiding the door zones). Stay safe!

It highlights the point that drivers must check before opening the offside door.
Another unnecessary casualty. So sad. -

Dreadful crash, dreadful and tragic circumstances, in particular being so avoidable with more care from the driver opening the door. It's depressing to see these same collision patterns occur over and over again. How awful the victim's close relatives and friends must be feeling.

Sorry to bring this one to the top again, but @RichardOsley who seems to work for the Camden New Journal has just tweeted this:
"Man charged with manslaughter in relation to death of cyclist Samuel Harding in Holloway Road on August 6."
I've not seen anymore info, so if anyone can confirm it that would be good.
RIP rider, hopefully Justice will be done, and be seen to be done.
--Edit--
Just found this: http://www.hornseyjournal.co.uk/news/man_charged_with_manslaughter_of_cyclist_sam_harding_in_holloway_1_1195136
Just heard reports on the radio that a cyclist has been killed on the Holloway Road at Jackson Road this afternoon.
No more information at present
RIP :(
