Help fitting quill stem

  • I've had a search on this forum and on google/youtube but can't really find an answer to my question.

Basically i've got a new quill stem which i'm trying to fit, however i've run into a problem. Where the bolt joins inside in the headset, the wedge (I think it's called) is a)stuck and b) the wrong size.

I've got some photos to help illustrate my point as i'm still pretty new to bikes

This the the wedge that is inside, how do I get it out? It's a pretty new bike so it won't be rusted or corroded on, I just don't want to force it out and break it!

The left is my new quill stem, the bolt size is larger than the bolt on the right which is the bolt that was attached to the wedge inside.

What do I need to buy to make my life ten times easier? Presumably a bigger wedge? I got this (26 / 100mm) quill stem by the way if that helps.
    Thanks!

  • That's an Ahead headset, also called threadless.
I'm afraid it is not compatible with quill stems.

  • Indeed, the part that's stuck is called a star nut.

  • Your quill stem is 1" and the ahead headset is 1 & 1/18".

  • Fast answers, thanks! As far I could tell you can only buy 1" quill stems, is this true?
How much will a new/correct headset set me back?

  • the stem on the floor is the type you need, it clamps onto the fork steerer.

If for some reason you want to use a quill stem, you'll have to get new forks (with a top threaded section) and a new headset...

Really? That sucks! I already got theses handlebars to fit the quill stem, they are 26mm, if I can't use the quill stem, those handlebars won't even fit on the current handlebar clamp as it's 25.4mm. I have messed this up good an proper, any suggestions?

  • Ive' never tried, but it''s only 0.6mm, shouldn't it be OK ?

  • You can cut up a coke can to shim the 0.6mm difference. Just cut a strip and wrap it around the bars before you tighten them up.

I think he's got it the other way around,

26 bars and only a 25 clamp, so a shim would only make it worse?

  • Yes, good point. Carry on.

  • ...or just use the stem on your floor?

  • easiest solution....
get a 1 1/8" ahead stem (the norm for about the last 15years) in the lenth, angle and clamp size that you need.
ahead stems go from dirty cheap £2 - £400 depending on how close to mid-life crisis you are.
    Problem solved.

Yeah I think i'm going to do this as i'd love to use the handlebars i've bought.
    Thanks for the help everyone!
