Strip and Respray - Costs?

Posted on
  • I've just bought myself a nice Raleigh frame which is a perfect fit. It has a couple of superficial rust patches where the paint has scuffed off but other than that it appears solid.

Now. Just wondering where I could get a strip and respray done and how much it might cost. I want just one colour all over.

    Thanks!

  • I'm going through this at the moment too, after not being the tidiest in the world when taking out a seatube from a steel frame with caustic soda.

I am still at the confused "enamel v powder coat" stage, but suspect that I will be swayed by the fact that there are a lot more powder coaters than enamellers around.

What do you need to do about the threads on the BB? Do they mask them, or is it more complicated than that?

    George

  • thought is was 50 quid from armourtex

  • Bb threads I would imagine they smear a finger full of grease, better than mask.

Home rattle can job cost me 2 primer (7 quid), 1 blue (8 quid)1 grey(8 quid), some stripper, wet and dry and took me about 15 hours over a week, then 3 weeks to cure and harden properly, and the quality is around 88% of ' as good as it could be'
I'm happy with it, and despite a few month of rain and being outside, no rust or blistering has occurred.
But it was the time, made 50 or even 85 powder coat look much more appealing.

  • Hi guys

I have a plain steel seat post I want to paint black - whats the simplest and most cost-effective way to do this?

    Cheers

  • You'll make the post wider by painting it... Buy a cheap black one, not worth the aggro...

  • ^^Boot polish

Worked for actors in the 1930's

  • I've had loads done and most powder coaters seem to charge £40ish for cash to strip the frame and powder coat it in a single colour. To get it for that price tho' you may have to have whatever colours they have lying about as it's about £250 for a box of powder.

    Here's one I did earlier :)

  • I had my previous bike done with Armourtex.
Frame, forks, seat post, stem, bars all in matte black. Total was £58 or £59.
I think it would be few quid more for gloss or other finish since as far as I know all colours are matte before applying any finish.

  • Just had my frame done by armourtex , orange with metallic lacquer , absolutely mint job,... was skeptical bout powder coat at first ,but they did it without applying it too thick ,can still see the lugwork nicely ..

  • exactly, it depends on the operator. Somewhere thats used to bikes will probably know to keep it thin & be very good at getting the coat even over the entire frame (really hard!), whereas your average industrial unit with a powder coat line won't be quite as good, though they'll probably be the appropriate price difference!
Spot 2miles from me would help me out and probably do A frame for free if I asked them again, but if I had a few would probably be £10-30 each inc bead/sand/nut blast to strip them clean.

  • Is there any other company that Respray bikes other than Armourtex?

  • I think we should pool our frames together and get them all done one colour at one time. Might work out cheaper per person.

  • Vaz and Colour-Tech.

Also Colour-Tech do (or definitely did) the wet coat paint jobs for 14 Bike Co.
