For information: the later 501 rear hub axles had a 4mm spacer that screwed into the axle itself. You could remove it to give you the 126 fitment.
Despite what many say about not using an 8 speed freewheel in terms of strength/rigidity I'd run one with a Sachs freewheel no problem.
The 501s are some of the best quality fhubs you'll get :o)
