What is this rough temporary shit the dentist has bunged in my tooth until I have a crown fitted?

It's difficult to eat and the stuff leaves a nasty taste in the mouth at all times, like eating pollyfiller

Temporary filling- the taste should fade, its' really soft, and will be coming off with your food at the moment, that will stop.

I had loads, for ages.
