To be fair though, I was surprised and delighted with how much more considerate French drivers are around cyclists (including lorry drivers). I'm taking my bike to Spain in two weeks so i'm hoping they are the same...

Don't expect such good treatment. My Spanish flatmate in Madrid rode her bike to and from work the entire year she lived in London and gave it up when she went back to Madrid, saying drivers are terrible. Maybe that's only Madrid? There WERE only about three cyclists there the whole 3 months I stayed there, though there was at least one bike shop.
