  • your not thinking of selling the streamliner per chance - as I cant find any in stock anywhere...

  • Not really, I'm still hoping to get another trip in this summer. When is yours? I could probably let you borrow it for a week.

  • Not to worry - I'm off for 2 weeks in July, but I am based in Bristol so would be a bit of a pain posting it back and forth etc - thanks for the offer tho :)
Will probably just buy a diff rack and one of the tubus adapters instead

  • hey everyone,
lots of info on here, but one thing seems to be missing - is there a way to fit a rear rack on a frame which doesnt have any mounts by the axle and if you DONT have a quick release hub?

I have been searching and searching.. and thinking and thinking and cant seem to find a solution- everything seems to mount below onto a quick release hub?

I have an old british frame (Allin) which doesnt have any mounts for any kind of rack at all, and im not really up for one of those seat post hanger jobs.. looks a bit weak to hang a pair of ortliebs off?

Wouldn't stand that much weight though.

Bit of a tangential solution, but how about swapping the solid axle for a quick release one? Should only cost a few quid and you can service the bearings while you're at it! I certainly wouldn't use P-clips for the bottom mounts as this holds most of the weight. I can imagine some sort of 2 holed metal adapter that mounts on the solid axle, allowing you to fit a normal rack, but I've never seen one.

P-clips up top on the seat stays is fine, as this is mostly for stability. Seatpost mounted racks aren't worth it.

The bike shop where I work sells those axiom racks. They are ok (my girlfriend has a road DLX, which has a proper sized top platform unlike the streamliner), but the quality is pretty average. Better than the cheapest, but not close to OMM or Tubus. Paint looks terrible after regular use, if that bothers you, and it isn't particularly rigid with the single top mount. I suspect it would do for occasional loaded trips.

  • Just get your LBS to drill and tap your track ends

  • Im having trouble setting up a decent rack. my bike has an aluminum mono seat stay going into carbon stays with aluminum chain stays and dropout.

is it ok to mount a rack on to the outside of a normal QR skewer? strong enough?

also id like to have one stuff sack on the top of the rack like this guy: http://ultralightcycling.blogspot.com/

do you reckon i can attach well enough to one of the thin roadbike racks like this: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/tortec-velocity-alloy-rear-rack-prod20132/?src=lfgss

Not sure what you mean here, which bit are you thinking of mounting it on?
    pics might help.
    Are you using p-clips?

  • Ortlieb do variety of attachment gizmos.

  • Got one of these for my trek in the Alps - worked really well: http://www.axiomgear.com/products/gear/racks/rear-racks/streamliner-road-dlx/

    Carrying around 15kgs

That should attach to your bike fine - uses the caliper mount and the qr seemed plenty strong enough (note that although it clamps using the qr the actual load isnt on the qr but transferred to the axle/frame when clamped)

    cheap too :)

  • is it ok to mount a rack on to the outside of a normal QR skewer? strong enough?

Yes, I've done lots of miles with a rack set up like this

  • is the single thin metal attachment to the brake hole strong enough on the axiom? the max weight would suggest so, but it just doesnt look like it would resist twisting. id be mounting it to carbon stays, is that alright?

dont like the seatpost racks, they put the luggage way too high on the bike, and im not conviced that placing all the stress there is a good idea.

  • I rode my setup like that with a Blackburn rack (q/r and brake mountings), never had any issues! I agree about seatpost racks, there just dumb, not sure about carbon stays but I should imagine it would be fine

  • should be fine - just try and make sure that the load is reasonably evenly distributed between the two sides

  • HI guys,

Sorry to open up an old thread but I'm looking into getting a Streamliner (now available in the UK again) for LeJog attempt this summer.

I was wondering about the image below, I currently have a rack (that fits to an extent using the mudguard eyelets and brake mount at the top) and the only problem I have with it really is the bits at the bottom that stick out (my rack and the axiom have the same thing). Well they rub on the panniers I have (ort rollers). The rubbing has caused a hole. Obvisouly don't want to buy another rack and have the same thing. What are those bits for? Strapping down?

    Cheers
    Rob

  • The Old Man Mountain rack, design for bicycle without eyelit for rack and able to sustain a lots of weight, they were design for modern MTB that doesn't come with mount for rack anymore (surprisingly few of them, apart from the cheap model);

    Here's another one if you don't have the canti mount;

  • What are those bits for?

Those bits are for strapping down. The illustrated ones appear to be removable, which would solve your 'hole in pannier' syndrome. Yours could be cut off if doing so didn't compromise the strength of the rack.

Who's selling this kit over here?

  • Cheers fella. Think I'll give the streamliner a go, its got some additional support at the rear that'll help it swinging about and its also a little further back which will help my heel clip. Hopefully that bit will come off :)

    They have em here.

  • Just bought myself an axiom and am having no issues with it, just wouldn't hit any big bumps with it fully loaded up.

  • Anyone know if there are any problems using the Axiom Streamliner with cantilever brakes? Is it in stock anywhere at the moment?

  • I have a mate with a Raleigh cyclocross with cantos and a streamlined. Seems to be ok but I'll get some snaps ASAP for your viewing pleasure.

  • J, this right?

If so, shouldn't be a problem.
