My housemate is after his first road bike, which I'm well pleased about as I'm sure he'd be up for joining us on some rides (even if only the ones with beers involved). It may also inject some urgency into a couple of other friends of mine who have been umming and arring about buying their first road bikes as well.
His budget is £100. Any style/age considered.
