  • after wanting a dslr for many a year i've decided to just get one and hope for the best!
I think i'm gonna go for a nikon Dsomething.
Is this a good choice? which one would be best for getting started? oh I will be spending about £200 secondhand

  • dunno anything about nikons but for that budget make sure you get a prime lens rather than a zoom

  • Use the search as there where a couple of canon 400d's floating around recently (assuming you are not tied to nikon lenses). Personally If I only had £200 then I would look into getting a really good compact like a lumix instead.

  • ^+1 what Omar said.

  • Plenty of good advice in this thread:

    Enjoy.

I've just acquired an Olympus Pen (the size of a compact, but it's a system camera), but the shutter lug and general awkwardness put me off.

I'd prefer a simple DSLR/rangefinder I can shoot RAW with without any bollocks.
Sure, when you don't know what you're doing the best thing is to invest in micro FourThirds system. I can't see any advantages of owning an entry lever outdated DSLR if you're not tied up to the lenses already.

  • The D40/D50 are fine cameras. The D50 has better lens compatibility, but.

In all honesty, there's not much in it at that level - Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony et al are all decent enough. Do you have an idea about what sort of photography you want to do? Then find the lenses that look like the most useful. Then find which mounts they come in. If you don't, then you'll be able to find the kit lenses cheap on eBay. Once you've used one of those for a while, you'll know what you need in the next lens.

  • Kit lenses... You can as well buy a bridge camera from Panasonic.

  • I assume nikon has the equivalent of the dirt cheap but really good Canon 50mm f1.8? If so, get that and the best 2nd hand body you can afford
